Emergency Contraception (EC) is also known as The Morning After pill, or Plan B pill. EC is not believed to be effective once implantation has taken place and a pregnancy is present. There are other abortion methods and options for existing pregnancies. EC consists of taking a large dose of oral synthetic contraceptive (Estrogen and progestin or progestin only) medication. EC is believed to act principally by preventing ovulation or fertilization. It also changes the lining of the uterus, so it may prevent the implantation of a fertilized embryo. The Plan B pill manufacturers provide warnings and side effects to consider, before taking the medication – see below for more information.Side Effects
Plan B pill side effects include queasiness and some women throw up after taking emergency contraception pills. You may also experience a headache, feel tired or dizzy, have some lower abdominal pain, or find your breast are more tender than usual.Things to Consider
- Emergency Contraception is not effective if a woman’s pregnancy has already implanted in her uterus.
- Emergency Contraception does not protect against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases or infections (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, etc.)
- The manufacturers warn that Emergency Contraception is not meant for routine use as a contraceptive.
